High Five French

Introduce your learners to French: join learner Emma and native French speaker Mathilde
in this innovative video and audio resource created to introduce French in Key Stage 2.

About the resource

High Five French is a resource aimed at young learners of French. Featuring engaging video and audio materials, activity sheets and notes for teachers, the course aims to encourage children to develop their language skills, to increase their understanding, to acquire an awareness of another culture and to build a solid foundation for future learning.

What's involved?

High Five French features forty lessons, covering common language structures and a range of topics appropriate for younger learners. Each lesson centres around a video episode featuring our two presenters. Additional materials help learners consolidate the language taught through audio materials and activity sheets.

Key features of High Five French

  • Engaging formula

We’ve paired a genuine learner with a native speaker, resulting in an enjoyable show which engages learners and is easy to watch. Learners will get to know Emma and Mathilde as they accompany them on their journey learning French.

  • Visual content

High Five French appeals to younger learners. Emma and Mathilde are not cartoons or teddy bears – they’re real children and learners can easily identify with them.

  • The perfect starter

Since each video lesson lasts just 4 or 5 minutes, High Five French is the perfect way to introduce a new topic. Both the audio and video content can easily fit into a busy day of learning.

  • Authenticity

Authenticity is at the core of High Five French: Emma really is learning French and builds her confidence through the lessons, and the entire series has been filmed on location in France, allowing learners to experience authentic culture and contexts.

  • Dip in and out

High Five French is not a course or a scheme: it’s a resource which will complement your existing range of materials and will bring an element of authenticity and up-to-date learning to your lessons. You can follow the lessons in order, or choose whichever lesson suits you and your pupils.

  • Non-specialist support

Even if you’ve never taught French before, the range of support materials included in the resource will help you to deliver French in your classroom. We’ve provided comprehensive lesson notes for teachers explaining every word and phrase covered in each lesson.

Each lesson contains:

  • Main Video Lesson

The video episodes are the main focus of each lesson. In the videos, Emma and Mathilde present the language, encouraging viewers to try to repeat the words and phrases. The video episode are around just five minutes long, so they offer plenty of opportunities for teachers to pause and review the words and phrases covered.

  • The Radio Show

In addition to the video episode, each lesson also features audio content in the form of the High Five French Radio Show. This gives learners the chance to practise the words and phrases covered in the video lessons. Presented by an experienced teacher, accompanied by Mathilde, the Radio Show is the perfect additional resource for the classroom.

  • Activity Sheets

The key to learning a language is consolidation and practice, and we have included a range of materials to help learners master the words and phrases of each lesson. Our Activity Sheets provide written exercises in the form of puzzles, games and writing activities. The sheets are in pdf format, so can be downloaded and printed, or can be completed as a whole-class activity on interactive whiteboards.

  • Teachers' Notes

Each lesson comes with notes for teachers which include detailed explanations of all words and phrases featured in the lessons; close-up notes on the patterns and grammar points covered; ideas for teaching the language in the classroom; and cultural information to help contextualise the language. The notes will be useful both to experienced teachers of French and teachers who are less familiar with the language.
